In a small house space has to work hard, so even if there is a separate dining room it can not always be totally devoted to eating and entertaining and will probably have to serve more than one purpose.
A dining room may also need to be an office, sewing room or playroom, so you must think about how you will use the room before you decide what furniture it will require.
A large dining table can double as a sewing table or, if the dining room is to be used as an office, you might prefer a smaller table to leave plenty of room for filing cabinets and a computer table. There may be a need for extra storage to cater for hobbies, or for a small desk for studying or doing household accounts.
It could be that this is the only room in the house where it is possible to get any peace and quiet – perhaps an armchair and footstool would fit in, along with a shelf for books and magazines.
